Trans and Genderqueer Core and Strength Class

Starting on September 19th, I'll be offering a donation based/notaflof Community Core class for Trans/Genderqueer* folks at the new Oakland LGBTQ+ Community Center that opened on September 7th. Note: for practical reasons the class name is shortened to T/GQ*, and therefore not inclusive of all identities (beyond cisgender), but please know that if you identify as something other than cis this class is meant to be resource for you and you are very invited to participate. What (class info): Core and Functional Strength Trans/Genderqueer* Community Class. Cis allies/supporters of our communities are kindly asked to not attend. This class is meant to be a wellness resource for adult Trans/Genderqueer* folks, especially those among us who have less access to health and wellness establishments due to issues such as lack of funds and negative and unsafe experiences at mainstream fitness spaces (linked to racism, transphobia, ableism, sexism, classism, body negativity etc).

This class is an invitation to explore inhabiting our physical bodies and having some fun while developing strength and resilience in the supportive presence of community. All levels of previous experience welcome, variations available for all exercises. Little to no equipment used. When: Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month @ 11am-12pm. Check out full list of all the dates in a separate section of this event post. (This class started off on Tuesdays but has been changed to Sundays. ) How much: Suggested donation $5-$15, no one turned away for lack of funds. BIQTPOC are especially invited to attend for free or donate at the lower end of the scale. How long: 60 min. Where: Oakland LGTBQ Community Center (Common Ground room), 3207 Lakeshore Avenue, 2nd floor, Oakland, CA 94610.

Access info: Wheelchair accessible, fragrance-free class (more info: ASL interpretation may be available with advance notice. The room has fluorescent lighting but I am looking into optional lighting. Please get in touch with me if you have concerns about accessing this class. How to attend: No sign up required, please get there 10-15 min early so we can plan out the space based on how many people are attending and start on time. If you are driving, please plan on some extra time to find parking. Please attend unscented to support access to this fragrance-free class. What to bring: Water and snacks are typically available at the Center but to be on the safe side please bring water bottle and perhaps a small snack to keep yourself nourished as needed before/during/after class.

I am working on securing mats but may initially only be able to offer a limited number of them so please bring a yoga mat if you have access to one.

Curious/nervous about what to expect? Here's a lil' info about the setup: THE STRUCTURE: typically a circuit (different for each class) of 5 exercises that we cycle through 5 rounds of, doing each exercise for 60 seconds and resting for 10 seconds between exercises (and resting 30 seconds between rounds). Class starts with a warm up and ends with a cool down. Variations are given for each exercise. Everything is self-paced, meaning that during the minute of an exercise you can do 1 repetition or 5 repetitions or 50 reps etc., all up to you and how you're feeling in your body at any given moment.

If you need to take a breather and dip out to stretch or just hold a static pose or get water, ask for a different variation and so on, you can do that at any time and for as long as you want/need to. If you want to distract your mind or you are motivated by self-competition, you can internally count repetitions and aim to match or beat the number of repetitions you did from previous round/s etc. You are also invited to just focus on your breath. -- APPROACH: No matter if you are showing up for class because you want to kick your own butt (whatever that looks like), or if you are showing up to just chill and experience some movement, or you want to connect with yourself and/or with trans and gender non-conforming community; this is a health and wellness space for you to do that.

-- TURNOUT FOR THE FIRST CLASS: We had about 10 participants with varying...
