The Loveliness of Air (I Can

Free and open to the public. Registration required. An original electroacoustic music composition for prerecorded electronics, multiple narrators, vocalist, and live acoustic soloist, The Loveliness of Air was created, arranged, and recorded in uncompressed audio by Joseph Wytko. The work is fundamentally based upon the notion of inclusivity versus exclusivity. An important representation of inclusivity includes the blending of acoustic and synthetic (electronic) sounds, the processing of electronic sounds to mimic acoustic sounds, and the processing of acoustic sounds to mimic synthetic sounds (no “types” of sounds are marginalized). Inclusivity is also depicted, among many other ways, by the inclusion of over a dozen languages. While the primary focus of this work is directly related to the highly moving poetry and prose left by children under the age of 15 who were victims of the Terezín Nazi Prison Camp, the work also incorporates several brief reminders of how exclusivity (bigotry and racism) has impacted and is impacting America.

We would love our friends at the ASU School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, School of International Letters and Cultures at ASU, Hillel Jewish Student Center at ASU, Chabad at ASU to join us.
