The Lost Sea Adventure

Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater in East Tennessee is a remarkable body of water known as The Lost Sea. Listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as America’s largest underground lake, the Lost Sea is part of an extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns. The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indians.  Our Lost Sea adventure will begin with a guided tour of the caverns. This involves a ¾ mile round-trip walk on wide sloping pathways. The pathways can be steep in places. While touring, your guide will tell of the caverns’ exciting history, including how the Confederate soldiers mined the cave for saltpeter for the production of gun powder.  They will also explain the fascinating geological development of the immense cavern rooms and rare formations.

At the bottom of the cave you will take a boat ride on The Lost Sea, America’s Largest Underground Lake.  The lake covering more than 4 acres, is recognized by the U.S. Department of the interior as a Registered National Natural Landmark. This is due to the natural phenomenon of the lake as well as the abundance of a large collection of rare anthodites, more commonly known as “Cave Flowers”. Along with the boat ride and cavern tour you will experience an extra tour just for our group. We will explore an undeveloped section of the cave. This will add quite a bit of excitement. The lake is located 140 feet below the ground level, so coming up can be a more challenging. The temperature remains a pleasant 58 degrees. The tour can last up to 2.5 hours.
