The Art and Science of Succulents

Art and Science of Succulents Saturday, August 17th, 2019 10 AM - 12 PM Why are succulents so popular, and why do they appeal to so many people?  Succulents are beautiful, diverse, and their cultivation and care are as much an art as a science. This presentation will take a look at succulents in nature and in cultivation. The science of growing succulents will include:  planting location, soil mixes, water, light, repotting and propagation, diseases and pests, and horticultural forms and oddities. We will examine the characteristics of some of the more common succulents including sedum, euphorbia, aeonium, echeveria, cotyledon, crassula, kalanchoe, agave, haworthia, and aloe. On the artistic side, we will provide examples of growing outdoors and in containers. We will talk about the colors in nature, and the audience will have a hands-on opportunity to examine the beautiful colors and artistry in an echeveria.

Co-Presenter Master Gardener Cynthia Nations:  Cynthia worked as a teacher from 2nd grade to doctoral level students, campus and district administrator, adjunct professor in educational leadership, and nationwide consultant for school improvement during her career in education.  She became a UC Master Gardener in 2015 when she moved to CA from TX. She is semi-retired and enjoys her grandchildren, succulents and organic vegetable gardening, painting watercolors, and other projects in Half Moon Bay. Co-Presenter Janice Moody: Janice loves to share her enthusiasm for gardening ever since she became a Master Gardener in 2010.  She happens to come from a horticultural family, but wasn’t able to pursue her innate passion for gardening until becoming an empty-nester in her 50s.  Succulents has become a recent passion for her, so much so that she opened a succulent business in Half Moon Bay last year and has hopes of expanding it into a landscaping business someday.
