- About the Chef -
Luis Herrera is a Venezuelan chef, who worked at Cosme, award winning Mexican Chef Enrique Olvera's restaurant in New York City, since it’s opening in October 2014 up until September 2017. Luis started as a prep cook and moved his way up to become a sous chef within the year and later the kitchen manager. Cosme was Voted New York Times "Best Restaurant in NYC 2015", Time Out "Best Mexican Restaurant in the US 2015", and awarded 40th best Restaurant in the world on "The World's 50 Best" list in 2017.
Luis and his wife are the founders of the now recognized "Brunch Gozon”. A Sunday day party they've been organizing for the past three summers, bringing traditional Venezuelan street flavors and tropical music to Brooklyn.
Coming from a scientific family Luis got a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Univerisad Central de Venezuela and it wasn’t until Summer 2012 when he visited New York for the first time and worked as a line cook at Caracas Rockaway making arepas, he knew he belonged in the kitchen.
His culinary career started a little later than most chefs would do, so he was determined to get as much experience possible. In 2013 he attended The Centro de Estudios Gastronomicos CEGA in Caracas for Culinary education and got a specialization in Venezuelan cuisine. He worked at Chef Carlos Garcia's Alto Restaurant, considered the best restaurant in Venezuela and later returned to NYC and worked in several places around the Williamsburg area, including Zizi Limona, lighthouse, Roebling tea room and Rockaway Taco at Rockaway Beach before joining the Cosme opening team.
At the moment Luis is a freelancer chef doing consulting work, pop-up dinners and showcasing Venezuelan flavors throughout New York City.
