Stop the Bleed

A team of leading trauma surgeons, including Martin A. Schreiber, M.D., professor and chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at OHSU, is providing a series of free 1-hour community trainings designed to teach private citizens how to respond to victims of a traumatic event. Schreiber and colleagues will provide hands-on training in tourniquet application, applying direct pressure and packing an injury using hemostatic gauze. Register here: Trainers will be presenting a 30-minute presentation that walks the participants through the concepts of bleeding control. These principles are taken from the lessons learned in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. After the presentation, participants will break into groups and practice hands-on bleeding control techniques.

These will be taught using real CAT (Combat Application Tourniquets) and plastic models that simulate a real victim’s leg. Participants will have to demonstrate appropriate application of the tourniquet and effective wound packing on the model to obtain their certificate of completion. Trainings are free, but registration is required. Stop the Bleed is a national campaign developed by the American College of Surgeons in partnership with the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians to teach bystanders to take immediate actions to stop and control bleeding. Participants will receive a certificate of completion and can purchase personal bleeding control kits at for $69-$99 (not required for the training). All participants are recommended to be physically able with the ability to lift 25-35lbs.
