Sapelo Island is a state-protected island (barrier island) located in McIntosh County, GA. The island is reachable only by airplane or boat, with the primary ferry coming from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center in McIntosh County, a seven-mile, twenty-minute trip. Visitors to the island must be a part of an organized tour or guests of residents on the island. The Sapelo Island, community of Hogg Hummock includes several small businesses and two active churches, including First African Baptist Church at Raccoon Bluff. Most inhabitants of the town are African Americans, part of the Gullah-Geechee community, and have been living on the island for generations. The current population in the community is estimated to be 27 This is a Service Project and all Participants must be able to lift up to 35lbs; load and unload luggage on and off of the ferry.
WHAT IS INCLUDED: • Dormitory Accomodations double and triple occupancy with one of the beds being a bunk bed (please advise if you are not able to climb bunk bed • Ground Transportation • Ferry Ride over to Island ITEMS TO BRING: • Folding Chair for the beach • Bring and prepare your own meals • Personal snacks and beverages • Reusable/refillable water bottle • A more detailed list will be provided as we get closer to the project.
