Paint and Prose

Workshop Description - What if there were more to say about an image that couldn’t be expressed through paint alone? What if there were a way to expand the viewers experience of your work through language or prose? I am not talking about an artists statement or manifesto. I am talking about arranging words using similar processes that we do as painters; rearranging text, collaging with words and paring these with our painted pieces. In this two day workshop we will examine the connection between imagery and language. Participants will create a small suite of paintings either working abstractly or representationally depending on their preference. We will explore a variety of writing prompts and simple word exercises to help generate language based related to our visual observations.  Participants will each create a small portfolio suitable for housing the pairings of paint and prose.  No experience necessary.

Materials students should bring:  a block of watercolor paper of your size/shape preference, a favorite pen, a sketchbook or journal. Bring a bag lunch or plan to run into town. Snacks and Teas will be provided-bring a mug. Materials instructor will provide:  While participants are welcome to bring their own favorite materials, I will provide the basics  for the class including watercolor, gouache, inks, and materials to construct our portfolios.  Bio:  Ingrid Ellison is a painter and arts educator working in oil, mixed media and printmaking.
