Miracle in Levittown

SUBVERSIVE THEATRE UNAPOLOGETICALLY PRESENTS: MIRACLE IN LEVITTOWN World Premiere comedy by Michael Fanelli Staged Reading directed by Michael Fanelli Dec 21-23 Celebrate the holidays Subversive-style. For the third show in our 15th season of radical theatre, we are excited to present the world premiere of an absurd antidote to Hallmark Christmas movies. LEVITTOWN cuts right to the heart of American hypocrisy as the young heroine of Miracle on 34th Street gets Santa to turn her into an African-American to test the racial exclusion policies in America’s first suburb in postwar Long Island. It’s a deliciously bizarre ride, rife with twisted humor, jeering derision and well-deserved rage Maureen O'Hara and Uncle Ned's family must face homelessness because the movers who were to take them to Levittown are coming to evict them.

They are visited by three ghosts who significantly contributed to racial segregation: FDR (the Ghost of Segregation Past), Moses (Robert Moses, the Ghost of Segregation Present—in 1947) and Resident Runt (the Ghost of Segregation Future, with his sidekick KaKa Conway). The family learns the reasons for their predicament, struggling to find a place to live—a young family of three, homeless at Christmas time. Santa also homeless because the North Pole has melted, finds them a place where all are welcome: The Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Levittown was written by Subversive member Michael Fanelli, author of previous Subversive productions Greenspan and the Trilobites (an Artie Award nominee) and Too Big to Fail. It features the acting talents of Constance (OffBeat Cinema) Caldwell, John Profeta, Jack Agugliaro, Jenae Leonard, Bob Bozek, Kent Bostock, Becky Globus, Hasheen DeBerry, Ronald Hicks, and Virginia Brannon as Resident Runt.

Levittown runs from December 21-23 at 7:30 pm. All shows are in our home venue The Manny Fried Playhouse at 255 Great Arrow Avenue on the third floor of North Buffalo's historic Great Arrow Building. Tickets are $10.
