Midwife Camp: Knot-Tying, Perineal Repair, First Assistant

Midwife Camp is a fabulous opportunity for CNMs and CMs to work with Nell Tharpe MS, CNM, FACNM in a gorgeous setting. There is time to watch the sunrise i=over the water, take long walks, and dig into the work of refining and expanding your skills. The MIdwife Camp brings to the table recommendations for evidence-based practice related to suturing, knot-tying, perineal repair, and acting as the first assistant during cesaren so that midwives can build upon and expand their core midwifery skills. Midwife Camp uses a co-housing model; meals and shared rooms and bath facilites are included in the registration fee, and everyone is included in cooking and clean up. The workshop's focus is on learning over time in a fabulous setting, so there is plenty of time for questions, reflection, and connection with colleagues.

All workshops focus on applying current evidence to allow the midwife to function to the full extent of their education. The first assistant workshop provides core knowledge and skills needed to perform at the novice level, and is also suitable for those experienced as first assistants. Beefore acting as the first assistant, midwives are responsible for setting up a mentored experience at their clincal setting to deevelop and refine skills so they can function efficiently, effectively, and with greater confidence as a member of the maternity care team.  The surgical knot-tying and suturing workshop includes key information about suture materials, surgical knots, and suturing techniques. Mentored simulation using suture with foam and fabric models is used to assess and refine each participant’s understanding of technical skills during knot-tying, selection of suture material, handling of suturing instruments, and application of suturing techniques.
The perineal preservation and repair workshop includes review of relevant anatomy and the effects of birth on the pelvic floor, recommendations for techniques to maintain pelvic floor integrity, assessment of the pelvic floor after birth, comparison of techniques for repair, and mentored simulation of specific closures using foam and fabric, and animal tissue models. The surgical first assistant workshop includes prevention of the primary cesarean, the woman’s preoperative preparation and informed consent, and functioning as an active member of the perioperative team, the role of the first assistant in applying surgical skills, participating in tissue dissection, performance of wound closure, management of complications and care of the woman after surgery.
Mentored simulation builds demonstrates knowledge of core surgical skills and coordination of perioperative team members through performance of cesarean on simulation models. 10% of all ticket sales goes to supporting midwifery through advocacy and our professional associations.
