Maine Township Agency Day

Maine Township's 37th annual Agency Day will feature workshop entitled Trauma Informed Care: A Conversation presented by Paul Skiba, PsyD. Registration deadline is April 23. Program Schedule 8:30 AM - Breakfast and Registration9:00 AM - Program and Presentations12:00 PM - Luncheon and Networking Workshop Details Trauma informed care is one of the most talked about topics in medical and mental health care today. The DSM-5 has recently widened the definition of trauma to include not only experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event but also having someone tell you about their traumatic event. This presentation will address the new definition of trauma and how trauma shows up at school, at the workplace, in professional and personal relationships, and in self-care. Dr. Skiba will discuss what organizations can do to more effectively and appropriately provide services for clients with a history of trauma.

When all employees, regardless of role, know how traumatized clients view the world, an organization can provide a more positive client-focused experience. Dr. Skiba will also address how to organize treatment with complex patients and will discuss the range of treatment options that specifically address trauma today. The format of his presentation is conversational, meaning at any point attendees are welcome to present a question or comment for discussion.  Learning Objectives Learn the definition and about different types of trauma Learn how those impacted by trauma experience their day differently Learn how trauma impacts the brain and body Learn how trauma impacts social and personal perceptions Learn how understanding attachment theory assists in communicating effectively with those who have experienced trauma Learn the current types of treatment for trauma Speaker Biography Dr.
Paul Skiba is a clinical psychologist with 34 years of experience in the mental health care field. He has worked as a residential counselor, psychiatric technician, mental health counselor, PHP therapist, family therapist, clinical coordinator, and clinical director while serving patients in psychiatric hospitals for 27 years. He has taught undergraduate psychology, graduate counseling, and clinical psychology for 16 years. Currently he is a full-time therapist in community mental health and maintains a small private practice. Dr. Skiba prefers to work with clients who are facing complex challenges. He enjoys the deep connection that occurs through total honesty and truthful conversation about how to face mental health challenges. He enjoys helping clients prioritize these challenges, take consistent steps, and then celebrate their success knowing there is still more work to complete.
Dr. Skiba views being a clinical psychologist as the best mission in the world as he walks the journey of life together with his clients. When not working, he enjoys seeing movies with his wife, watching his daughter ride and train horses, playing tug of war with his 150 lb Mastiff, Stella, in the backyard, or reading and creating charts/pictures from psychological, brain science, psychotherapy, consciousness, and spirituality books and papers. Agency Presentations To help increase awareness of local community resources, the first seven agencies to respond will have three minutes each to share their mission and services with those in attendance during the morning program. Everyone is encouraged to bring brochures, flyers and business cards to display on our information tables and to use for networking purposes.
