“Assembling Publics/Rehearsing Rights: Civic Engagement in Contemporary Art” with Melissa Geppert, Ph.D. , Art Historian University of Central Florida, School of Visual Arts & Design In today's rapidly globalizing world, what defines a "public" and what cultural forms produce a sense of common belonging? What constitutes, sustains, or threatens public life? Geppert’s talk explores contemporary art's role as a platform for public engagement, looking at a range of projects that take up debates involving public infrastructure, civic participation, and human rights. Dr. Melissa Geppert is a specialist in contemporary art history, visual and spatial culture, and critical theory. While her interests in these areas are wide ranging, she currently researches contemporary projects wherein artists collaborate with on-going initiatives in community development and human rights.

Dr. Geppert has presented her work internationally, including at the College Art Association annual conference, Performance Studies International, the Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics' Encuentro, the Latin American Studies Association annual conference, and Columbia University's Institute for the Study of Human Rights Historical Dialogues conference. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum, located on the Rollins College campus, is open to the public, year-round, with works also on view at The Alfond Inn. Free admission for 2018 courtesy of PNC Financial Services Group. No reservations or tickets are required for this event. Free parking is available on campus and in the SunTrust Garage on Lyman Avenue with a Museum-validated parking stub. The museum is closed on Mondays, during major holidays and for installation of new exhibitions.
