June 10, 17, and 24th - Exploring the Power of Place: A three-day workshop for writers and artists
The Little Tennessee River Valley is a magical place - a storied landscape rich in cultural and natural history and no better place to fine tune or develop your skills in observation and creativity. Participants in the workshop will begin every Monday at 9AM at the Alarka Expeditions office in Franklin, NC with a discussion on assigned readings, then we’ll head out to a nearby location for inspiration and creative work. This workshop will take place for the first three Mondays in June, from 9AM to 1PM. Your leader is Brent Martin, author of three chapbook collections of poetry - Poems from Snow Hill Road (New Native Press, 2007), A Shout in the Woods (Flutter Press, 2010), Staring the Red Earth Down (Red Bird Chapbooks, 2014), and co-author of Every Breath Sings Mountains (Voices from the American Land, 2011) with Barbara Duncan and Thomas Crowe He is also the author of Hunting for Camellias at Horseshoe Bend, a non-fiction chapbook published by Red Bird Press in 2015.
His poetry and essays have been published in the North Carolina Literary Review, Pisgah Review, Tar River Poetry, Chattahoochee Review, Eno Journal, New Southerner, Kudzu Literary Journal, Smoky Mountain News, and elsewhere, and he has recently completed a two-year term as Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for the West. A collection of his place based essays on natural history and change in the southern Appalachians, The Changing Blue Ridge Mountains: Essays on Journeys Past and Present will be released by History Press in June 2019. He has taught place based courses for Carolina Mountain Literary Festival, Jackson County Arts Council, The Wilderness Society, and the Highlands Biological Station. This ticket gets you ALL THREE SESSIONS for $100.
