Helen Keller in Deliverance

In 1919, Helen Keller went to Hollywood, formed a film production company, and made a film about her life called Deliverance. Once it made the rounds of the theatres of the day, it was largely forgotten. Thought likely to be lost, a copy has been found and will be screened on September 30, 2019, the centenary of the opening of the Bijou, the first purpose built silent movie theatre in Tuscumbia. It will screened at the Helen Keller Public Library. One afternoon screening at 2PM and an evening screening at 7PM are planned. The film will screened as is, i.e scratches and defects as are typical of surviving silent films and without sound.TAP will continue research into possible other sources of portions of the film as well as background material will continue. Image stabilization and digital cleaning are being investigated.

The last third of the film features Helen Keller, her mother, brother and Anne Sullivan playing themselves. Helen riding a horse and flying in a plane of the era are amazing to witness. Please use EventBrite to confirm attendance..
