Free program on Caregiving

The first step to successful caregiving is taking care of yourself. Being a family caregiver is a demanding role which requires an immense amount of dedication and commitment. This role also calls for a great deal of sacrifice. Because caregivers have to offer so much of themselves, it may leave them feeling empty— so empty they may feel as if they have nothing left to give. As a caregiver, you have to give to yourself in the same way you give to others. Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) can positively impact the caregiver experience. The program supports caregivers by enhancing self-care behaviors, examining ways to manage emotions, encouraging self-efficacy, and promoting the use of community resources. Research and evaluation of the PTC program has proven it to be beneficial to caregiver health for a diverse audience of people from different backgrounds and ethnicities.

The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service offers the PTC program as a six-week course at no cost for a limited time. Each session is customized with interactive lessons to equip family caregivers with tools needed to take care of themselves while taking care of someone else. The classes are led by county Extension agents & volunteers who have completed PTC training. The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for this class, will be provided for caregivers to borrow or purchase. Focusing on self-care allows a family caregiver to recharge and allow others to be strengthened from their power supply. The class size for this program is limited and requires registration.
