"I had thought about doing "I Feel For You" ever since Prince released it on his second album in 1979. By then, Prince and I had already gotten to know each other, though the first time I laid eyes on him, I wanted to smack him.



I met Prince because he tricked me, sometime in the 1970's while I was playing in San Francisco. I was in a hotel room when my phone rang. "I didn't know you were in town. "It had been a long time since I'd seen or spoken to Sly Stone. Could I meet him at the studio he was working in? "Sure. "I'd been chilling with a friend who came along for the ride. When we got to the studio, we couldn't find Sly or anybody else for that matter, until we stepped into this little one room and spied this skinny little guy with a humongous afro. "You seen Sly?" (Prince) That was me that called you." "And who the hell are you?" Even back then, Prince was so very seductive. As we started talking about I don't remember what, I wasn't able to stay pissed at him for long. I found myself wishing him well on the album he was working on.


That was the beginning of our friendship. Not that we got close right away, but we kept in touch. Sometime later, I was with a friend who was playing Prince's album. One song caught me. "Ooh, that's a great song. " "Yeah great song alright", my friend replied. He thought the whole album was great. "But it's over now" he added.
