Dickens Christmas Festival & Carnton Plantation Tour

Dickens of a Christmas Festival & Carnton Plantation Home Tour – Franklin, TN Pickup at Dunham’s Sports in Scottsboro at 9am Pickup at Dollar General in Gurley at 9:30am Pickup at Old Time Pottery in Huntsville at 10am As soon as we arrive in Franklin, we will enjoy at privately guided tour of the Carnton Plantation Home. Carnton was built in 1826 by former Nashville mayor Randal McGavock (1768-1843). Throughout the nineteenth century it was frequently visited by those shaping Tennessee and American history, including President Andrew Jackson. Carnton grew to become one of the premier farms in Williamson County, Tennessee. Beginning at 4 p.m. on November 30, 1864, everything the McGavock family ever knew was forever changed. The Confederate Army of Tennessee furiously assaulted the Federal army entrenched along the southern edge of Franklin.

Some 9,500 soldiers being killed, wounded, captured, or counted as missing. Nearly 7,000 of that number were Confederate troops. Carnton served as the largest field hospital in the area for hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. The floors of the restored house are still stained with the blood of the men who were treated here. After the home tour, we will have time to explore the grounds, outbuildings, garden, and cemeteries on our own.  Next, we will venture into downtown Franklin for the 35th Annual Dickens of a Christmas Festival. This festival recreates the time of Charles Dickens using historic downtown Franklin’s Victorian architecture as the backdrop. Some 200 musicians, dancers and characters will fill the streets, including several from Charles Dickens’s stories.
Expect to see and interact with the nefarious Fagin from Oliver Twist; Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim Cratchit with his parents from A Christmas Carol; and of course, a Victorian Father and Mother Christmas with treats for children. There will be plenty of shopping and food options available. You will have up to 3 hours enjoy all of the sights of the festival on your own.
