Civil Rights Pilgrimage for Faith Leaders (Memphis to Montgomery)

A pilgrimage for pastors and leaders of communities of faith Over the course of four days, traveling by bus from Memphis to Montgomery, we will visit and reflect on some of the iconic sites in our nation’s history of grappling with slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement and our contemporary reality. We will meet with people who can help us understand how the past shapes our present, and will spend time as a group of faith leaders considering how this experience can shape our ministries here in Wisconsin. Overview We will gather in Memphis early on Monday afternoon. We will be in Birmingham on Tuesday, drive through Selma and spend Wednesday and Thursday morning in Montgomery. Detailed itinerary to be announced to registrants at two pretrip meetings.  The trip is being coordinated by the Rev.

Kerri Parker, Rev. Winton Boyd and Rev. Phil Haslanger. We will be meeting with local leaders at pretrip meetings and along the way; information about these subject matter experts coming soon.  Highlights The Lorraine Motel and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis The 16th Street Baptist Church and the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument Park The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma The Legacy Museum and Lynching Memorial in Montgomery   Costs Participants are responsible for getting to Memphis and returning from Montgomery. Expected cost for the days on the journey is $695 for a single room, $495 for a shared room. This covers the lodging, bus, food (except for dinner Tuesday and Wednesday), museums and visits with local experts. The trip size is limited to ensure a quality experience for participants.
A downpayment of $200 is required to ensure your seat; final payment due 2 months before the trip. If paying by credit card is an obstacle, contact the WCC offices for alternative arrangements. .
