Communities for a Better Environment, Latino Equality Alliance, residents and community leaders advocate for green space and transparency in Huntington Park.
Huntington Park was awarded $4.7 million dollars to transform the Department of Water and Power (DWP) properties into recreational green spaces leading activists to call for a change in city policies regarding civic engagement efforts.
Community leaders request the City of Huntington Park and Department of Water and Power to form a true partnership with the community in transforming the DWP fields into safe public pathways, dog park, youth playgrounds, family picnic areas and community gardens. A community lead petition drive gathered 1,134 signatures in writing and 41 through change.org bringing the total to 1,175 in support of the community request.
The DWP fields between Florence Avenue and Santa Ana Street in the city of Huntington Park (the “Fields”) are an eyesore, attracting illegal dumping and compromising the health and safety of the surrounding neighborhood.
The City of Huntington Park has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the State of California. According to a study published by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, 53 percent of Huntington Park children are listed as overweight or obese compared to 38 percent of the state’s children.
According to the Huntington Park “Parks and Recreation Master Plan”, the park system for city is significantly undersized for the population of the city. Statewide Parks Acreage Standards provide the goal of attaining a ratio of 5 acres of parkland per 1,000 population.
Huntington Park currently provides 0.44 acres of parkland per 1,000 population, grossly below the recommended ratio. The acreage of the DWP fields adds up to about 5 acres.
