Be Bear Aware— Sandpoint

ICL, the U.S. Forest Service, and Idaho Department of Fish and Game are teaming up for a Bear Aware event. Learn more about traveling safely in bear country and how to use that bear spray you’ve been bringing everywhere, but never tried. The event includes inert bear spray canisters to practice with. Brian Johnson, Idaho Department of Fish and Game grizzly bear information and education conservation officer, and Brett Lyndaker, Idaho Panhandle National Forests wildlife biologist, will host a two-hour presentation focusing on the use of bear spray as one tool to avoid bear conflict. Topics covered will include A brief history of grizzly bear population declines Grizzly bear biology Grizzly bear versus black bear identification General conflict avoidance techniques Food storage requirements on national forest lands.

A discussion of the origins and use of bear spray will be followed by an opportunity for participants to actually discharge an inert bear spray training canister. Participants will be entered into a drawing to receive a free bear spray holster. A minimum suggested donation of $5 is encouraged to help cover the cost of training canisters. Registration is required and space is limited.
