A Staged Reading of Shaw Vs. Tunney

Join Remy Bumppo Theatre Company and the IAHC for a staged reading of Douglas Post’s play about the friendship between Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw and prizefighter Gene Tunney this spring. A Staged Reading of Shaw Vs. Tunney is based on Jay R. Tunney’s Book The Prizefighter and the Playwright. Nick Sandys directs. The reading features Chicago actors Sean Michael Sullivan, Eliza Stoughton and Bradley Armacost. Shaw Vs. Tunney concerns the deep and enduring relationship between George Bernard Shaw, celebrated Irish playwright, and Gene Tunney, American heavyweight world champion. It begins with their first meeting in London in 1928 and culminates on an island in the Adriatic where Gene and Polly Lauder Tunney, an heiress and socialite, spent their honeymoon.

It is there that Shaw, invited for an extended visit, and the Tunneys experience an extraordinary event that changes the lives of these three people forever. This is the story of a profound friendship between a boxer and a man of books. A Staged Reading of Shaw Vs. Tunney is Monday, May 7 at 7:30pm in the Fifth Province and is free. The pub opens at 7pm for a cash bar and traditional Irish music.
