35th Annual Chicago Blues Festival

The Chicago Blues Festival will spotlight the great Chicago-born music tradition with live performances by the genre’s leading artists at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the city’s premier outdoor music venue. Headliners include: Corey Dennison Band; Mississippi Heat with Billy Flynn and Giles Corey; Special Tribute to Bob Koester and the 65th Anniversary of Delmark Records; Selwyn Birchwood; Willie Clayton; Little Walter Tribute; Fantastic Negrito, Kenny Neal, Mavis Staples, Bridges to the Blues celebrating the Year of Creative Youth and much more. For a complete schedule, visit www.chicagobluesfestival.us. Headliners on the Jay Pritzker Pavilion stage will perform from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. each evening. Music and entertainment throughout the park will begin at 11 a.m.

I've been going every year since '89. I book my room every December and plan my entire year around this one weekend.

But last year was horrible. The new venue is awful. It's not large enough for a million people and it's lost all the vibe that the openness of Grant Park had. The loss of food row last year was inexcusable (the pot stickers from the Chinese vendor were always a must have and a highly anticipated part of the weekend). 2 or 3 lousy food trucks that can't accommodate the crowd was unacceptable. (Not to mention one of them swiped my credit card # and made several purchases out of state. CC company caught it though.) I went ahead and booked our room in November for this year in the hopes that last year was a fluke and Millennium Park was a temporary venue. I suspect this will be our last year. I've absolutely had the best times of my life during Bluesfest weekend since I was 20 years old.

I've fallen in love, I've danced with strangers from all over the world in the rain to Coco Taylor and Bonnie Raitt, I've danced with my daughter when she was little and I dance with my granddaughter now. All good things must come to an end I guess. :(
Change the venue. Seeing Gary Clark Jr. was great and all last year, and it was my first blues fest, but finding out that it used to be at Grant Park in a much more open area makes me wonder why the venue was ever changed. Although I saw Gary play, my girlfriend and I were constantly trying to find a decent...
