2017 TRSC December Workshop

Tentative Schedule of Events: 8:30-9:00 a.m. Check in and light breakfast Session 1 (9:00-10:15 am): Programming A-Z with Megan Cure (0.1 CEUs pending) Description: “I’ve got a great idea. We’re going to start an underwater basket-weaving class for people with disabilities. I’m so excited. ” We’ve all got great ideas. But how are we transitioning those from a pipe dream to a successful program? In this session, we will review what it takes to get a program from ‘idea to product,’ including program creation, budgeting, structure/layout, implementation and evaluation. This session is ideal for the seasoned professional as well as the new CTRS at any level. Break (10:15-10:30 a.m.) Session 2 (10:30-11:45 a.m.): Goals and Programs: Getting Back to Basics with Sarah Braun and Felicia Barnhart (0.1 CEUs pending) Description: Let’s face it: many of us haven’t touched a TR textbook in years.

Just like driving, if you pick up a bad habit, it’s likely to stick with you for life. In this session, we will revisit the use of goals in therapeutic recreation. Topics include how to write good goals, how to use them in programs, and how to track progress related to those goals. This session will be a good refresher to making goals meaningful and effective. (11:45am-1pm) Lunch is provided (Qdoba burrito bar) TRSC Section Meeting during lunch- please join us. Session 3 (1:00-4:00 p.m.): Please Don’t Eat the Children: Positive Behavioral Supports (0.2 CEUs pending) Description: As TR professionals, we are expected to know a lot. Some of us are our agency’s ADA advisers, others assist with reasonable accommodations. But almost all of us have had to help troubleshoot a ‘behavior kid,’ both in our programs and in others.

In this session, we’ll review the concept of behaviors: why do they occur? What is their purpose? And more importantly, how do we respond/engage/solve so we don’t get so angry we ‘eat the children?’ We’ll review in-depth data on behaviors and cover ways to appropriately respond so that everyone wins. This presentation will focus on behaviors prevalent in various populations, youth through senior adult. All disciplines are encouraged to attend. Registration Fees: Full Day: $60 Member $75 Non-member $15 Student 0.4 CEUs (pending) and includes light breakfast and lunch Morning or Afternoon Half Day: $35 Member $45 Non-member $5 Student 0.2 CEUs (pending), does not include lunch .
